Summer is just around the corner and, as every year, discussions and debates about the positive and negative aspects of sun exposure are proliferating.
In this article, DERMO28 experts try to clarify the influence that the sun has on our skin and our body.
The Sun is a medium-sized star that floods the Earth with light, but in addition to light, we also receive the now well-known UVA and UVB ultraviolet radiation. UVA represents 95% of the radiation that reaches the Earth's surface and is therefore the most harmful. They are able to penetrate the atmosphere and are always present even in winter and on cloudy days. Their danger comes mainly from the fact that they affect the skin painlessly and immediately go deep into the Dermis, causing the formation of free radicals which, in the long term, can damage cells, accelerating aging processes and promoting the onset of diseases. UVB, on the other hand, have less power and mainly affect the skin surface, causing erythema and burns.
In summary, UVB rays visibly damage the skin's surface, while UVA rays cause deep damage, not immediately visible but dangerous in the long term.
Given these premises, we can only conclude that the sun is harmful to our skin; however, we must not forget that thanks to it, our body increases the production of Vitamin D, which helps strengthen bones and relieve joint pain.
And the benefits don't end there! Has it ever happened to you that a sunny day improved your mood?
This happens because endorphins are released during sun exposure, which improves mood and increases energy. The sun also regulates the production of Melatonin, a sleep hormone that improves its quality. With due precautions, sun exposure also improves the condition of various skin conditions such as Acne and Psoriasis, thanks to the stimulation of skin barrier function and the increase in immune defenses.
Finally, although the list would be much longer, adequate sun exposure improves our metabolism and keeps brain function active.
That said, we can say that the sun is fundamental for living a healthy and happy life, but it is important to take important precautions to prevent it from becoming too aggressive for our skin.
The use of creams with sun filter ensures that damage is screened and the skin is protected. We know that there are different SPFs and, although all skin types need protection, everyone has different needs. In general, a product with a high SPF is recommended for all phototypes during initial sun exposure. This does not mean that the skin tans less; on the contrary, the result will be more homogeneous and even without burns and erythema. Even darker skin needs to be protected because, even if it doesn't get sunburned, it still suffers the "invisible" and deep damage from UVA rays.
So, take advantage of the sun and its benefits by always using protection suitable for your skin type and remembering that UVA rays are also active in winter, so it is always recommended to use a cream with a protection factor throughout the year to have a youthful and healthy face.
